Last month, we discussed the initial response, hazard recognition and mitigation points for the scene of a trench collapse. This month, we are continuing our discussion in the arenas of response size-up, various types of shoring and their applications and additional support operations that may be necessary on-scene. It should be noted that the trench rescue scene is a dynamic arena; things can change at a moment's notice.

Driver Rear-Ends County Deputy's Cruiser in Ohio

WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio

A Hamilton County deputy had to be cut from his cruiser after a crash along a highway.

Investigators said the crash happened at about 1:10 p.m. Saturday along westbound Interstate 275 near Lawrenceburg Road.

Officers said a driver rear-ended the cruiser.

Firefighters were dispatched to cut the deputy out of the cruiser.

Two people were transported to University Hospital.

The condition of the patients was not released.

Neighbors Pull Man From Burning Home in Wash. State

RENTON, Wash.

Neighbors pulled a man from his burning house on Lake Desire east of Renton Friday morning.

The fire broke out at about 4 a.m.and quickly escalated to two alarms. Firefighters had difficulty reaching the home on the narrow, wooded road.

When neighbors realized the house was aflame, they rushed to rescue the one man who lived in the house.
